When to come in

Around the first birthday, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. Early visits catch developmental issues, establish a fluoride plan, and — most importantly — make the office familiar before anything is ever needed.

What actually happens

A first appointment is short. We count teeth, look at how the jaws are developing, gently polish if the child is comfortable, and talk with parents about brushing, bottles, pacifiers and diet. No child is held down and nothing is forced.

How parents can help

Keep the language neutral and positive. Avoid words like hurt, shot, or drill, even in reassurance — children hear the noun, not the negation. Schedule mornings when they are rested, and let them bring a comfort object.
