What a first dental appointment usually includes

A first visit typically begins with a conversation about your health history and any concerns, followed by X-rays when they are due and a full examination that may include gum measurements and an oral cancer screening.

Many offices complete a cleaning at the same visit. If your gum health calls for a different type of cleaning, the dentist should explain why.

What to bring

A photo ID, any dental insurance card, a list of current medications and supplements, and the name of your physician. If you have had X-rays elsewhere recently, ask that office to forward them.

If you are anxious about dental visits, tell the office when you book — it helps them pace the appointment.

Your dental records

Dental records belong to the patient. When you change dentists, you can ask your previous office to transfer your records, including images.
