What we look for
A thorough exam is more than a cavity check. We chart gum pocket depths, evaluate existing restorations, screen the tongue, palate and throat for abnormal tissue, assess your bite for wear patterns, and note early cracks before they propagate.
Findings are photographed and shown to you on screen. Seeing the crack yourself makes the recommendation obvious rather than abstract.
Gum health is whole-body health
Periodontal disease is linked to cardiovascular disease, poorly controlled diabetes, and adverse pregnancy outcomes. It also progresses painlessly, which is why so many people are surprised by a diagnosis.
When we find early gum inflammation, treatment is usually as simple as deeper cleaning and a revised home routine. Left for years, the same condition costs teeth.
Home care we actually recommend
Two minutes of brushing twice daily with a soft brush and fluoride toothpaste, daily cleaning between the teeth with floss or interdental brushes, and a nightguard if you clench. That is the whole program, and it outperforms every gadget sold on television.
Frequently asked questions
- How often do I need X-rays?
- Bitewing X-rays are typically taken once a year for adults with average risk, and less often for patients with a long cavity-free history. We take them when they will change a decision.
- Are cleanings painful?
- A routine cleaning on healthy gums is not. If your gums are inflamed they may be tender, and we can use topical or local anesthetic to keep you comfortable.
- Is an electric toothbrush worth it?
- For most people, yes — particularly oscillating or sonic brushes with a pressure sensor. Technique still matters more than the device.
