Why Preventive Dentistry Saves You More Than It Costs
Skipping a cleaning feels like saving money. In practice it is one of the most reliably expensive decisions a patient can make.

The economics of a small cavity
A cavity caught at the enamel stage is often a single filling completed in twenty minutes. The same cavity two years later may have reached the nerve, and now the conversation is about a root canal and a crown — several times the cost, several times the chair time.
Nothing about the tooth changed except how long it waited. That is the whole argument for preventive dentistry compressed into one example.
What you cannot feel
Early decay does not hurt. Early gum disease does not hurt. Cracked-tooth syndrome often produces nothing more than an occasional odd sensation when biting. By the time pain arrives, the inexpensive window has usually closed.
Professional exams exist to find the problems that produce no symptoms, using X-rays, periodontal charting and magnification that home care cannot replicate.
A realistic maintenance plan
For most adults: two cleanings a year, bitewing X-rays annually, a full exam at each visit, and a nightguard if you grind. Higher-risk patients — smokers, diabetics, dry-mouth patients, and anyone with a history of periodontal disease — benefit from three- or four-month intervals.
Insurance plans generally cover preventive visits at or near one hundred percent, which means the highest-value dentistry available is often the cheapest to you.
